Obituary - Rex Middleton 1945 cadet (extract from All Hands Summer 2002)It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Rex Middleton in 2002. Rex was born in Chingford, Essex on 13th March 1929 and was probably at the School of Navigation during the transition period between South Stoneham House and Warsash in the 1945/6 period. On leaving the school Rex was apprenticed to the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co. Ltd. (later to become Shell Tankers Ltd.) and remained with them until 1951 sailing on his last tanker the Neverita as 3rd Mate. He left to join the Blue Star Line where he sailed on many of their refrigerated cargo liners to various parts of the world. He obtained his Masters Certificate in 1957 and then left the sea to go into the tea trade. He worked his way up to become the Managing Director of Banbury Tea Warehouses until it was taken over in 1985. He then became a director of McGregor Cory (Banbury) Ltd. and was also the Chairman of The United Kingdom Tea Association until retiring in 1990. He was married for forty years to Janette and had two sons Nicholas and Christopher to whom we offer our deepest sympathies at this time.
