Website Lesson - (Gallery) how to upload a photo

Enter the Gallery via either the picture link Gallery on the first page or the drop-down menu link "Content/ Gallery" below the banner. The latter menus can be accessed from any page on the website but the picture link can of course only be used from the Home page.

If scanning a photo ensure it lies flat on the scanner glass otherwise the result will probably be out of focus. End of year graduation photos therefore need to be removed from the cardboard frame before scanning as the thickness of the surround means the photo will be out of focus. I have found 300 dpi resolution adequate for all the photos I've uploaded. Also if there are large areas of background around the cadets it is best to crop and save less than the full size of the photo for uploading. This will ensure details are easier to see.

Gallery itself contains several galleries and sub-galleries each with titles relating to specific Topics e.g. Life at sea, Warsash courses. When you want to put one of your own photos in the Gallery (this is called uploading a photo) first navigate to the gallery with the most appropriate title by clicking on successive links. Here are 2 examples:

1. A photo of yourself aboard a ship - navigate to Gallery/ All galleries/ Life at sea/ Members aboard;
2. Your cadet term graduation photo - navigate to Gallery/ All galleries/ Warsash courses/ Graduation photos by year/ 1959.

The same applies of course if simply viewing photos. The navigation route is always displayed in blue text on the first line of the current gallery. From there you can go directly back to any gallery in the route by clicking the appropriate gallery name.

Once you've found your chosen gallery you will see small thumbnail representations of the photos already in the gallery. To view a photo full size double-click on the required photo.

To upload a photo:

1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "add image".
2. In the Upload box use the "Choose File" button to select the photo for uploading from your computer.
3. Describe the picture in the Description box (names, event, dates). This is compulsory information.
4. Scroll down and click on the "Preview" button.
5. The "Add image" button appears alongside "Preview" and the word "loading" shows for short while.
6. Click "Add image" causing the photo to be uploaded to the website.

For end of year graduation photos please include as many names (and shipping companies) as you can recall. For conformity please use the same format as seen in the 1959 photo entitled "ENTRY 67 January 1959 - December 1959".

When the full size photo is displayed it also shows your Username as the person submitting the image.

After the upload ends the gallery into which the photo has been uploaded re-appears. Due to the validation process until validated by website staff when viewed full size the picture will appear with a caution message to this effect. Normally validation will happen in under a day and often much sooner.
