WA website Bulletin 2010/10 Tuesday 25th May 2010
  • To use the links below, first login then press the Ctrl key on your keyboard whilst you click the link in this bulletin.
  • Please read "Website Tips repeated" at the bottom of this bulletin and refer to the online Help Forum first if in difficulty. This will help me reduce the hours spent supporting members; (and reduce the likelihood of divorce which would be a great pity when on Friday it'll be exactly 50 years since I first met my wife!)
  • You'll find more (cheeky) advice here >> Help request - unable to open document (a Neil Martin contribution).

What's new

'59ers 50th Anniversary Reunion at Warsash Maritime Academy - Thursday 13th May

Nine ex-cadets who were at the School of Navigation in 1959 visited the Academy for lunch and a guided tour of the WMA. They were Trevor Judd, Bill Wood-Roe, Tony Griffiths, Mark Elliott, Bruce Pollard, Peter Davy, Rod Burnett, John Wood-Roe and Chris Clarke. The visit was organised by Mark Eliott through Sue Bowles, PA to the Director John Millican (one our members) and Vanessa Mole of the Publicity Department.

The visit was an enormous success and we are indebted to Mark and Sue for their efforts. Sue would like it to be known that any other groups of ex-cadets and students, whether members of the WA or not, wishing to arrange a similar visit will be most welcome. We were certainly made to feel very welcome and were impressed by the warm hospitality shown by all WMA staff we met. You can of course email Sue from her Profile on the website as she is one of our Honorary Members.

For some the visit to Southampton extended over two or three days; four played golf near Botley on the 11th and three of us sailed over to Cowes and back on the 14th. You can read about all three days in the attachment below which includes some photos. At 3 MB in size it may take a little while to download depending on your Broadband connection speed at the time.

New photos uploaded
All Hands Spring 2010 colour edition now online

A full colour edition All Hands Spring 2010 has replaced the previous b/w version and can be downloaded via this link >> All Hands Spring 2010. Unfortunately the website doesn't let me place items in publishing date sequence which I hope to change during the website review currently under way.

All Hands Spring 2010 has also been uploaded retrospectively here >> All Hands Spring 2009. It contains very intersting articles on Maersk Line, Port Line, a Vintage Port reunion and the graduation photo taken at the end of Summer Term 1959. Well worth reading again.

All Hands download times

The time taken to download All Hands from the website depends on size and the speed of your Broadband connection at the time. You may need to wait patiently sometimes especially as Broadband speeds vary so much. I usually indicate download times based on 5 Mb Broadband speed at which speed journals with few exceptions, download within 1 1/2 minutes and most under 40 seconds. There are a couple of exceptions but even so its well worth the wait.

Try your hand in the Forum. It's not difficult and you'll find plenty of guidance here >> Forum.

We have a number of Forums where you can raise and discuss a host of issues for anyone to read and respond to. You can ask questions, start discussions or try to track down out of touch colleagues. See an excellent example here >> Warsash legends. Further examples:
Warsash Momentos

One of our new members who joined this year, Anthony Ireland 1960, is interested in Warsash mementos. He has located websites offering various items including cuff-links, key rings, calendars and Christmas cards. Also a website able to copy cap badges. Living in Spain with little else to do (just kidding Anthony) he suggests he could do any necessary artwork. The WA crest of course is an ideal subject. If you are interested in pursuing this matter with Anthony or think his idea has potential please let him know via this email link Anthony Ireland copy to me at Chris Clarke.

Fancy a challenge?
  • Go to Gallery Home > Where in the world is this? for a picture quiz. Five photos, only two solved so far, both by John Marshall 1959. Clues added. See if you can identify any of them.
  • Upload your own photos to this gallery for others to identify. But don't give any clues in the name of the file uploaded which could give the game away!

Website usage

  • The number of unique visitors to the website in May has averaged 41 per day (48 throughout April).
  • There are 1,856 posts in the Forum and 1,081 photos in the Gallery.
Kind regards,

Chris Clarke 1959

If you don't need a printed All Hands you could set an indicator in your website Profile denoting this, which will save us printing and postage costs. Unless you decide to change the default setting you will of course continue to receive printed copies.
