Normal service resumes

Website support is back to normal since I returned from eight fantastic days plodding up and down some very large French Alps near Morzine with Trevor Judd (1960). To prove it wasn't a myth you'll find a few photos here >> French Alps 2011. (If you have any interesting photos please upload them to the Gallery or contact me for assistance).

Holiday Inn: If attending and staying in the Holiday Inn and you haven't yet booked please note the following information from John. I have been told that there are two weddings at the hotel the weekend we are there. If you haven't done so already, I would recommend you make your reservation. Please call 02392 856 300. This will bring you to the Front Desk of the hotel. You may use the front desk to make your reservation or ask for Kelly Vardy. Kelly will normally be available Monday to Friday, 0900 to 1700. She handles group reservations. Our group reservation number is 500252. Our group rates are GBP 87 per room per night for a double or twin and GBP 67 per room per night for single occupancy.

This rate includes a full English Breakfast. Please specify if you require a double or twin bed arrangement.

Hotel parking: The hotel has 65 car parking spaces which are complimentary for guests on a first come, first served basis. Once spaces are taken, you can purchase parking permits from reception to park on the roadside - there are plenty of spaces. The cost is GBP 2.50 for 24 hours.

Grey Dawn Breaking

In my experience there aren't many books about service in the Merchant Navy which feel authentic and written by an author who knows what he's talking about. One such book however is 'Grey Dawn Breaking' (link to more information) written in 1986 by Tony Lane (1975), based on his 9 years at sea as deck apprentice, able seaman, Third Mate and and Second Mate. After coming ashore Tony became Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Liverpool.

Currently Tony is thinking of launching a small research project on the 'origins and destinations' of Warsash cadets. More information will appear in the bext website bulletin.

Piracy

Click the link below to visit this anti-piracy website where you can send a pro-forma letter to your national government urging greater action to combat piracy.

You can help stop the hostage-taking and help restore the freedom of the seas. Please add your voice to this worldwide call for government action. More robust laws, stronger enforcement and firmer political resolve are needed to stop these pirates. From the site just two clicks are needed to send the SOS letter, in your name, directly to your own government.

WA Facebook Page

Are you registered with Facebook? If you are or if you should decide to join FB you w help publicise The Warsash Association. The more who are aware of the WA the more people are likely to apply for membership. For those of us who may be wary of social websites, as I am, simply ensure you restrict access to your FB account, as described in the FB 'settings' section.

Why do we use Facebook? The advantage is the 'ripple effect' whereby each visitor can immediately spread the word amongst his/ her own 'friends' and each of these 'friends' can spread the world to another layer of ther own 'friends', etc, etc.

Why a Facebook WA Page? This function enables news feeds e.g. this bulletin, to be automatically transmitted from our website to our Facebook WA Page which notifies Group members.

Within 24 hours of setting up our Facebook WA Page and Facebook WA Group the recorded number of unique daily visitors to the WA website significantly increased in July to 78 and so far in August to 90. So far we only have 8 members of the Group but hopefully this will mushroom in the weeks to come. Please do visit our Facebook WA Page, leave a message and consider joining Facebook in order to join the Facebook WA Group. With luck and a fair wind you will help WA benefit from the worldwide horde of Facebook users.

We have two Facebook WA Group Administrators, myself and David Baker who is the Cadet Liaison Office at The Warsash Maritime Academy. David has kindly agreed to help us use this facility and to spread the message about WA amongst today's cadets and junior officers who have attended the Academy.

Andrew Armour

We recently received the sad news that Janine Armour, the wife of Honorary Member Andrew Armour, died of cancer earlier this year. Our thoughts are with Andrew and his family. Andrew is the co-owner of Halcyon Yacht Charter Ltd. In 2009 and again in 2010 Andrew kindly invited 10 WA members who had sailed on Halcyon as Warsash cadets, as his guests on a day sail in the Solent.

Website usage

  • The averge daily number of unique visitors to the website so far this month has been 91 (78 in July).
  • The Warsash Association website now contains: 4,126 names, 146 News articles, 22 Events to date, 1,352 photos in 232 Galleries and 2,372 Forum posts
  • Website uptime in the month of July was 100% (independantly monitored). There were no outages in the month.
Kind regards,

Chris Clarke (1959)

Website Tips

Preference for the online All Hands journal?

If you would like to change to the online version instead of receiving a printed copy all you need do is to set the All Hands indicator in your website Profile to zero. This will save us printing and postage costs, both of which increased in 2011 due to rising VAT and postal charges. Unless you decide to change the default setting you will of course continue to receive printed copies.
  • To read how to set the indicator go to sub-forum >> Member's Profile then load the Topic Profile - opt for online or printed All Hands.
  • Anyone belonging to our Australian or New Zealand Branches choosing to rely on a downloaded copy only please also let Neil Martin (Australia) and Darrell Daish (New Zealand) know.
Your first actions after logging in:
  • List recent messages and photos created on the website using the function "View" in the top right corner of your screen.
  • Click on "View - Posts since last visit".
  • Click on "View - All photos last 4 weeks".
Lost your password?
  • Generate your own new secure password via the website click "About this website/ Unable to login?" in the drop-down menu.
  • This will email to you a link to change your email address and then another email to let you know the new password which has been generated.
  • Remember - passwords are case sensitive.
Gallery hints:
